Our molds produce great Marzipan and Chocolate Clay candy. As well as edibles, our molds may be used for art projects such as Paper Castings and Clay work.

Above is a cookie I made with our Persch Swan Mold #1560. Its a beauty and at 1 3/4" in diameter it is perfect for Wedding Receptions and Teas. Below is the mold we created from replicating an original wooden mold. It was sent to us from Germany by Herr Persch for replication.

This mold measures 6" x 4 7/8" and has 9 individual images. The cookies produced will measure about 1 3/4” x 1 1/4”. The images are all very detailed and have good depth and dimension showing fur, feathers, clothing. The original mold dates to 1846 and belonged to a farming family in Kirchheim unter Teck in Germany and now resides in the Mildred E. Jenson Collection in the USA. This mold is item #1529 and sells for $33.95.

An "Old World" Santa that comes from the town of Biberach an der Riss in Germany and dates to about 1850. The mold measures 10 3/8" x 5 5/8" and will produce a very dimensional cookie that measures 8" x 3". This mold is item #1524 and sells for $46.95. Using edible colors, this Santa will look his best in a blue or perhaps forest green coat. Paper casting from this mold are equally impressive and will make a great framed 3D picture. Order early to avoid dissappointment .

Cool Santa for Gingerbread

I just finished pouring silicone to make a couple more “Mother” molds. This Santa arrived yesterday. I prepped it last night with mineral oil to help seal it and today I used Vaseline to seal the worm holes so the silicone would not travel to far into the surface and become stuck. The Santa came from the town of Biberach an der Riss in Germany. The owner gave me a date of about 1850 for its creation. It’ll become a Speculaas and gingerbread mold. Paper casting will also be made from it for framing.

We have gotten back very positive feedback on the molds we have sent out.
To make things smoother, we have decided to make our initial opening for the majority of our unique molds in the Spring of 2010. Some pictures of the molds to be introduced will be posted but a few will not be unveiled before they are posted for sale. A few molds will be available this Fall season. A couple never before available anywhere that will be sure to please.

We have recently added to our main site, TheSpringerleBaker.com. We have posted a small part of the Sara B. Carlisle collection. The "Adventurer" mold is fantastic with all its pictures and "possible" story.

Yes, we can replicate your molds for you too!

It has been busy these last 2 weeks preparing a few more antique wooden molds for replication. We have also been getting new equipment in and setting it up for production. We promise to introduce some never before available molds and motifs.

A few times now since we began sharing our new venture, we have been asked about replicating molds that belong to others. The answer is yes. We can when the time permits also replicate your molds. The fee will depend on the size of the mold to be replicated and the number of procedures that are required to produce your working replica.
Generally the fee would start at about $75.00. The materials involved are expensive and it takes time. The "Mother" mold you pay for is yours. A good "Mother" mold can last for 100 or more castings before it begins to degrade. You would get the "Mother" mold and a copy of your mold. We would keep nothing except our payment. If your mold is unusual we would certainly ask about purchasing copy rights or working out something else with you. Totally up to you.

Custom colored cookie molds? Sure, we do that.

Being produced for the baker, these molds may be ordered in colors to suite your tastes. The wood look is surely the most desirable but what is most important about these unique molds are their images. So why not express your individuality with your favorite colors.

Below are some recent examples.

After using the crystal clear multi image molds that were produced first, I'd suggest a colored mold. While pressing a large mold, say the Stuttgart Nativity, would be easier to press with the clear molds, small multi image clear molds may not be the best thing.

New Mold Releases

Our first few molds will have their initial offering through this blog. Eventually, The Springerle Baker will be carrying and selling many new never before available molds. I have been in contact with many collectors and have purchased the rights to replicate their molds. Many motifs will be common but the large multi image boards will be quite desirable. These large boards will be replicated in a limited number so that not only are they desirable due to their beauty and histories but also because of the limited available copies.

This week as with last we will be working on "Mother" molds for replicas we hope we will have time to offer this coming holiday baking season. I say hope because there are other areas of the business that is also requiring my time. I am also working on new recipes and designs in the kitchen. I expect to introduce 2 very nice Santas this Fall that are to be used for gingerbread.

This is one of the boards we recently received from a collector and we are in the process of replicating it. This board contains motifs I have never seen on a Springerle. I'm speaking of the skeleton reaper and the skull next to the crypt. Having held this board I can tell you that I do not believe it was the work of a master carver but it is good work. The detail of the faces is sorta primitive.

Keep in mind that all of our molds will be available in limited quantities for their first initial offering. If you see a design you like, please write and ask about reserving a copy.

On this post you will find the molds that will be available for purchase. Many designs being offered for the first time. I expect to halt mold production in early October so many molds that you see here may also be limited to the amount available for purchase.
Along with the mold you will also see the cookie that can be made from the mold. Any history or details about the molds original if there are any to relate will also be on this page. All molds will be dated with the date they were produced.

Test Results for New Molds

After hours of waiting I was able to conduct some tests on the new molds. They prove to be quite durable, lightweight and user friendly. Several were cast with the new resin formula so different size molds could be tested. One of the important tests was to see how well they stood up to a 10 foot drop onto concrete. The results were EXCELLENT!! No splits, breaks or cracks. A couple did get a few small pits at the corners (see photo) but nothing at all to be upset with. I don't expect folks to purposely be dropping their molds outside on the concrete but they may hit the kitchen floor. These molds will not have a stain or sealer so there is no need to worry about flakes coming off onto your dough.

The original mold is on the left. I may tweak the color more but all those that have held them so far like them as they are. In the next photo you can see the damage to the mold by being dropped. Bottom right of photo.

I designed these molds with the baker in mind so they may not appeal to the collector. Although I do suspect the new and different designs will appeal to all that bake Springerle or other molded cookies.

Below is a photo of the recent molds we produced. I have attempted several times to get a good picture of their true color. Some will be a bit darker and some a bit lighter. Some will have dull surfaces and others will have a shinny surface. The replicas take on the characteristics of the original mold they were replicated from. Thus, some shinny and some dull.

With the testing now complete we will begin a production schedule for the different molds. At this time it is not certain how many of the new designs we will be able to ready for this coming baking season. Already folks have been asking to reserve molds and its a good idea to do that. Another Great Day for Accomplishments!

First I'd like to say thank you to those that have already reserved molds. We will not do any advertising for another couple months but until then we will sell molds by way of this blog. If you see a design you like please be sure to ask about the molds availability.

We were pleased with the results of our castings from last night. The weight and color are good but now we must wait a couple days before testing our molds to discover how their durability is. Pictured are some of the castings we made last night. Please note that the molds may not look the exact shade as are pictured here. I only take okay pictures but I do try to capture them as I see them. Just to give you an idea, all of the molds on this post are the same color but the camera gives them all a different look. The one most like the real color is the "Trumpeter" mold.

You may find it interesting to know also that the replica molds reflect the surface of the molds that the "Mother Molds" were made from. Wood may be dull unless it was waxed at some point, stone will be slightly shinny and other molds will as well reflect what the original was made from.

This Nativity Scene mold measures about 5 7/8" in diameter. Different times of the day today it looked either like a light pecan wood or like a light brown clay. Either way, it produces one great looking cookie. I posted a picture of the cookie produced from this mold yesterday.

This mold I refer to as "The Colonial Hunter" and it measures about 2 7/8" x 2".

This is a new look for the "Trumpeter" mold and it measures about 1 7/8" in diameter and produces a cookie that is about 1 3/8" in diameter. This is a mold that has never before been available.

More work will be done with "Mother Molds" this weekend. Well, at least that's what I would like to work on this weekend.

New Materials and Components Arrive!

New materials arrived today that might make it possible for us to begin full production soon.
Yesterday I baked some Springerle cookies that I produced from our trial molds. The designs are all great with much detail and artistry. Here are two of the most impressive.

The Nativity scene pictured is a favorite at our bakery due to its size, depth and detail. The cookie
measures about 5 1/4" in diameter. Notice the

The Queen is also a great cookie. The cookie measures about 9"tall x 3 1/2" wide at the base and is filled with details. Filigree, flowers, lace and jewels make up this beautiful representation of their Queen. Today was the first time I had baked this design. I had never before seen this particular design but it will become a Christmas standard for us at the bakery. Next I will see how she looks in Gingerbread. Painted with petal dust she would certainly be one of the most sought after holiday cookies!

More trials tomorrow. A new mixture was poured into a few molds today so I am anxiously awaiting tomorrow to see the results.

Great results from our latest Mold Casting.

After several attempts, the formula combination I am looking for is close at hand. Today’s success was a hugh breakthrough for us. Several companies and individuals have given advice and materials towards our goal. Even with that we have had to make many sample molds with the different materials to get us to the point we are at today. All this takes quite a bit of time and patience.

This is the second mold I have produced and am now offering pre-production copies for sale. The original was in bad shape with numerous worm holes and flaws. I spent months "cleaning" up the first copy I produced from the original that was sent to me to be able to produce this working mold.

This mold is a resin copy that I make using FDA approved materials. It measures about 8 1/4” x 5 3/8” and produces 20 different cookies that measures about 2” x 1” each. These are a perfect sized cookie with detail. The images on this mold are of folks in different professions and some animals. Never before has this Springerle mold been available for purchase.

Costs of Reproducing Antique Springerle Cookie Molds

I was once asked why resin copies were so expensive. At that time I had not dealt with resins or silicones but knew the materials could be expensive. Now that I am involved with reproducing old molds I can see the costs more clearly.

First there is the need to obtain the rights to copy an old mold that may be in a collection or museum. This can be very expensive as the owner would like a good sum up front to purchase the rights to their mold for a set time and or would like a percentage of each copy sold. Secondly, the cost associated with having the mold reproduced in silicone by a professional so that there is not any damage done to the original mold. With this, the materials and labor can prove expensive. Thirdly, having a resin formula produced to meet your requirements can be very expensive and then the resin itself is quite expensive.

Some mold reproductions are sealed and then stained and are quite good while others will have their finish wear off over time with use. This leaves a mottled looking mold with the bare resin exposed. The molds we are looking to produce will not have the stain but either be just a clear mold or tinted colored mold. My experience and that of others that have already used the molds being produced is that the doughs release quite readily from the mold without the addition of any extra powdered sugar being used on the mold.

Springerle Molds and Cookies

After years of baking Springerle and giving instruction to others I decided to produce unique Springerle cookie molds. I looked for a company that could produce the copies for me but I was not able to find one that could do what I required. I insisted on food safe resins and other components. The search for qualified folks that could tackle this project for me began. After months of research and correspondences I believe this new partnership will be able to deliver what I had been looking for.

At the present they are formulating the resin compounds they will be using to produce the replicas. Myself and a few others have used several of their prototype molds and we are very happy with them. The mold pictured here with the Springerle is one of them. The cookies measure about 1 1/4” in diameter and are very detailed. A small one bite size cookie with plenty of depth and detail.

These are quite impressive little Springerle with the trumpeter announcing good things. They were cut with a fluted cutter to add a little more to their overall design. Making these was the first time this mold had ever been used and the Springerle it produced will grace a table with other Springerle designs at a wedding reception this weekend.
